| All about mobile solutions | ||||
This month we’re focusing on Mobile Solutions. Let’s face it – Mobility is the name of the game. More business is now done, sitting at a stop light, waiting to catch a flight, via email, or video conferencing in the comfort of your own home. To survive and thrive in today’s competitive business landscape; you must have the ability to move business information quickly and securely between the back office and the front lines. The growing demand for mobility creates new challenges for small to mid-size businesses. Your IT guy (or you in some cases) now has to find a way to protect valuable corporate information and assets while also making solutions simple and useful for mobile workers. Securely connecting your mobile and remote users to critical business applications is a must. We’re not just talking Smartphones and Blackberries, mobile messaging, wireless systems, and CRM; we’re talking remote access, VPNs, Exchange Servers, Citrix and VoIP. The different choices available to you are abundant. How do you pick the best solution for your business? Well…we’re here to help. Sometimes first understanding the lingo can be half the battle. Here once again, to help is our trusted Geek Translator. VPN (virtual private network) is a network that uses the Internet, to provide remote offices or individual users with secure access to their organization's network. A virtual private network can be contrasted with an expensive system of owned or leased lines that can only be used by one organization. The goal of a VPN is to provide the organization with the same capabilities, but at a much lower cost. The cool part - VPNs encrypt data at the sending end and decrypt it at the receiving end. Unless the data is encrypted properly, it will not be allowed to pass through. An added level of security involves encrypting not only the data, but also the originating and receiving network addresses. A SSL VPN (Secure Sockets Layer virtual private network) is a form of VPN that can be used with a standard Web browser. In contrast to the traditional VPN, a SSL VPN does not require the installation of specialized client software on end users' computers. So literally, remote users can access your network securely from any computer. MPLS - Multiprotocol Label Switching – What the heck? (That’s what I said!) Maybe the easiest way to explain it is to compare it to a VPN. VPN vs MPLS
Exchange – by Microsoft is probably revered as the Industry’s leading server for email, calendaring, and unified messaging. It meet’s today’s business and IT challenges keeping the mobile workforce in mind. As the use of email increases – naturally so does our expectations. We expect rich, efficient, and secure access to email, calendars, attachments, contacts and more – no matter where were are or what type of device we’re using. Exchange Server 2007 offers built-in protection from spam, viruses, email spoofing and snooping, system downtime and compliance risk - anywhere access to email, voice mail and calendars from numerous devices. VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol – pretty simple, it’s running your phone system over the Internet. Not only does it provide a cost savings because you’re transferring data and voice over the same connection, but it has added functionality too!
So as you can see, there are lots of options out there for you – and because I like you, I’ll let you in on a little secret…this is just the start. Don’t panic! We’re here to help. Have questions? Not sure what you need? Or what solution is right for you? Give us a call today. |
