Dale's welcome

This month we’re combining Dale’s welcome with subject education. When you can keep it short and sweet, go for it – right?

Wireless – the pros

Wireless is inexpensive, easy, and convenient. It’s great for your home, making it easy to work on the couch, wander to any room, or even work outside on your laptop. With a $50 wireless router you have everything you need to cut the wire to the Internet.

Wireless – the cons

But should you use wireless in your business? I say no. For the conference room it’s OK, but not for your employees’ computers.

Wireless runs at half the speed of a wired connection, even when it’s operating at 100%. So if you’re running over gig of wired Ethernet, your wireless is running at 1/20th the speed.

Interference is a consideration too. There is so much interference now, it makes the connection unstable. Think about all the cordless phones, baby monitors, and cell phones being used in the three-block radius surrounding your home or office. They all send out and receive data streams, cluttering the airspace.

Wireless – the BIG con

The biggest drawback of wireless is that it puts all of your sensitive data out there for anyone to see. Yes, you can secure and encrypt the data, but those determined to get it will. And wireless makes it a lot easier for them – they can be anywhere nearby and hack into your system and you wouldn’t even see them!

Your best bet

Since wireless is so convenient, set it up at home and put it in your conference room for guests. Then take care of your need to roam the office by having someone run cables down the walls so you can plug in anywhere. Your connection will be faster, reliable, and much more secure.
